Everything I Am Learning About Life,
I Learn From My Horses.
A Life-Long JourneyWorking with, playing around, and learning about horses has been my doorway to a world of meaningful lessons – a bit like attending "Life Skills School” where ponies and their personalities combine to teach patience and wisdom. Lifelong lessons aren't confined to the barn; they weave their way into our lives, enriching our interactions, fostering empathy, and shaping us into more considerate individuals. It leads me to ponder how different life might be if all humans could experience the open-heartedness, forgiveness, and authenticity that horses embody. Whether a budding equestrian or simply curious about life's wisdom, these lessons from the world of horses are gifts that keep on giving and hold a touch of magic for both children and adults alike.
Hearing vs. Listening & Reacting vs. Responding: Horses are constantly sending us messages and feedback. Did I listen to their questions? Was I patient and kind with their opinions? Am I an empathetic listener and communicator when it comes to their questions and opinions? How am I choosing to respond, or am I reacting instead? Horses teach us the value of patience, through the efforts of listening and communicating with them in order to build trust and strong relationships. It is essential in training, riding, and working with these magical animals. We communicate with each other through body language and energy. Learning to understand and respond to their cues, fosters better communication skills, which are transferable to human interactions, and develops empathy for our horse's needs and feelings, helping us to become more compassionate and considerate individuals. Setting Boundaries & Respecting Those of Others: We might think it's important to be able to tell them where to go, but it's about so much more. How do we treat them with respect so they can have their dignity, while being able to set our own boundaries so we don't get stepped on? Learning How to Trust & Being Trustworthy: Its ok to be true to ourselves which can often make us vulnerable. Being vulnerable can be scary for both humans and horses. Building trust with each other is a gradual process. It is earned through reliability, honesty, and consistent care which mirrors human relationships, and it allows us the humility to become trustworthy leaders. Going Out of My Comfort Zone & Finding my Courage: Sometimes we have to go out of our comfort zones in order to grow. It isn't about being fearless, rather it's about overcoming the things that stop us from living the life we dream of living. Developing our skills and achieving our goals in horse(wo)manship in spite of our anxieties helps us boost our self-confidence and self-esteem.
